THE Christmastime home video

What makes a good holiday home video?

Nice trees?  Lots of pretty decorations?

George W. Bush family, maybe in 1987 Camera time with your family?

With your mom and the grown-up kids home to visit?

Your busy dad who has the weight of the world on his shoulders?

Playing on the floor with a Christmas decoration?  Running through the house with your sister?

Playing in the snow?  Your sister with snow on her face?

Ignoring a command?

Making your dad look silly when you run off?  One of his buddies making a dumb joke?  People he knows from work acting stiff for the camera?

Nice background music, not blaring?

Check out this home video!  It's 7 minutes and 19 seconds long.  So it will take a while to completely load.

Yes, the starting image while it's sitting here is strange. You can see what it really is around 3:37 to 3:43 into the video.

Or you can see it on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Shxz48hEFJ8.

Maybe you want to see it bigger.  Maybe the second time around so you can see more: http://www.youtube.com/v/Shxz48hEFJ8  (The quality isn't quite as good when it's bigger.)

You can also go to a page that has the video and the script.  Or download the video yourself.  (48 MB!)

Happy home-video howlidays for hounds!

Miscellanea

No, Mister Ed didn't appoint Miss Cellanea as the new Human Assistant. Just so you know.

Tippy, he said that he wouldn't come spray you with citronella even though you teased me.  ::big Husky scowl::

I don't know what propriates are, but he said that it wouldn't be a propriate. Plus, he said, you live with a leagle beagle. I've looked at your dogster page. I didn't see any beagles. So I don't know what that's about, either.

He says he also wouldn't want to accidentally get Benny or Moey.

little dog with birthday treatsAnd he would not want Minky after him!

So this picture is a piece offering.

A piece of cake, a piece of ... whatever that other stuff is.

H.A. says that MaxFund looked like this on Saturday during the open house.

Except for the candles and "Happy Birthday!"

Dogs and bake sale everywhere!

And possibly a few cats and people.

I'm not sure that's a Pom like Minky in the picture. It's hard for me to tell. And the Pomeranian picture at the American Kennel Club looks like a Chow Chow.

Tucker:  Ooh, yum! Is it time for evening chow?
mr_ed:  Not yet.

But anyway. H.A. says he doesn't want to keep Lucy. He wants this happy, lively girl to go to a family. Maybe, hopefully, with kids.

But, at least, people who'll run and play with her and love to comb her tangly Spaniel fur and have a doggy door where she can go in and out without going around a grumpy Siberian Husky.

Hey! I didn't say to write that!

A while back either Mr. Barlow or maybe the Platoon of Four said that the Army of Four said that "slightly fattened russian female dogs are healthier than skinny american dogs."

We only know of three Russian dogs by name. Shakal (Jackal) iz Solov'ev is in Canada. We hope we can meet him someday, but he's 15.5 now. Anyway, he's not female! As his mates can tell you.

The other two were in Spain. We don't know where they are now. One is Shakal's brother, Shapochka (Hood, or Little Hat) iz Solov'ev. Also not female! The other is Zholtaja (Golden) iz Sibrt. Born in the Czech Republic of Russian parents. She at least is female.

So anyway. We're pretty sure that Шакал (Shakal) is healthy. But he's a boy and he's in Canada and that's all we know about that.

Briefly....

A reminder that this is an endangered blog.

The Human Assistant doesn't want to help me with it anymore. If you're reading this and want me to keep blogging, please leave a comment. (And thanks to those who have!)

If you're not reading this and want me to keep blogging, please leave a comment!

I bring this up again because last night's blog was a disaster. Of course it took a long time for H.A. to make his pictures pretty. (Or as pretty as they were going to get, anyway!)

But he didn't mind that because they were pictures of me, after all. Oh, and one of Gremlin.

Well, yes, and a couple of girls at MaxFund. He puts some of those photos on the forum where volunteers hang out. So my point is that he would have spent the time on the pictures anyway.

Then he thought we'd just slap 'em on the blog, write a little, and done! It took about four times longer than he thought. I don't know what took all that time because I dozed off. But I know it made him late getting up and getting our breakfast!

kitten watching dogs through window So just a couple of quick things tonight. Then we're outta here!

This picture made me think of Zim from the Army of Four staring at cats.

Only this one is from the kitty's point of view!

And even through a window with noseprints you can see that that dog isn't as handsome as Zim!

That kitten is cute!

But H.A. says that puppies, kittens, and human babies are cute so they can suck you in.

Then they grow up!

Maybe sheep babies suck you in too.

This little lambie seems to be jumping on cue. Is this something puppies can do?

Not when a human wants a video of it, of course. But maybe when somedoggy else in the pack says, "Dog, that's really annoying!" With a cue like that?

I don't remember. Being a puppy was a long time ago for me. And I kinda like doing what the H.A. says so I can get treats! But I was just wondering.

Two happy endings

Monday's weather was just how the Human Assistant likes it! Blue sky, cool air, warm sun. Tuesday morning's weather too.

Tuesday afternoon got cold, fast. It even snowed the tiniest bit in the evening.

Monday afternoon H.A. liked the weather but stayed indoors. Well, he did go help a friend with a computer. But they didn't do that outside!

Tuesday afternoon he didn't like the weather, but he worked in the yard. Of course I liked the cold, so I stayed outside with him. But, I mean ... who can figure humans out?

H.A. picked up all the apples that were on the ground. And there aren't many left on the tree. I'm afraid the days of lying around with an apple next to me are about over for this year.

Which was half the point of H.A. picking them up off the ground. (The other half is not wanting the neighbors to tell him the yard smells like vinegar.)

He thinks I may be more friendly to other dogs when I don't have an apple or three to guard. (Three was the most I ever had at one time.)

I don't know about that.

Holly, H.A. hasn't seen any Siberian Huskies in the area lately that are the right age or sex to bring here (except in an emergency).

See, he figures another male and I would get into fights. And he thinks a senior would be better for me and for our yard. A senior wouldn't bug me all the time like that darned puppy, Mystique. And wouldn't jump over our 4-foot fence.

Speaking of Mystique. When H.A. stopped working in the yard, he came in and surfed the net. Look what terrible thing he found! It must be Mystique's southern cousin!

I didn't understand Radar's story when the H.A. read it to me from itchmo. So he had to hunt down the articles.

First was the original story that was published Monday:
  • Family drops off dog with veterinarian and travels out of town;
  • Vet neuters dog and boards him for several weeks;
  • Family comes back to get dog from vet;
  • Dog doesn't act eager to leave;
  • Three days later dog jumps fence;
  • Dog travels one mile to vet's clinic;
  • Dog waits and waits outside clinic (it's Sunday);
  • Vet drives by clinic and sees dog;
  • Vet opens clinic;
  • Dog runs to crate and settles in;
  • Family says they'd been wanting to rehome dog;
  • Vet keeps dog as clinic pet.

  • So far, so good. Dog finds home he likes better. Everydoggy is happy. The end. Until the back story emerges....
  • Original story published the following Monday;
  • Another family sees story;
  • Mom recognizes their dog, missing 7 months;
  • Mom yells excitedly to dad;
  • (Kids are at school);
  • Mom calls clinic;
  • Mom goes to clinic;
  • Dog happy to see mom;
  • Dog goes home with mom;
  • Dad happy to see dog;
  • Kids come home from school;
  • Kids faint and hit heads on rocks;
  • Story published next day;
  • Story leaves out fainting because I made it up.

  • How about that? A story with two happy endings!

    And here's a third one. It's snowing for reals now.  Woo hoo!

    By the way. The Army of Four inspired me to put weather reports on the blog.

    Not that I'm a copy-dog or anything.  ::big Husky grin::   But the Human Assistant agreed it might be fun to play with the map thingies.

    The Ao4 shows weather in Archangelsk, a cold place in the northwest corner of Russia. Also Manhattan. Only it seems to be somewhere called Kansas.

    map of Chukchi Sea I show weather for where we live in Denver, which is in Colorado.

    [Is Colorado a state or a state of mind?  -- mr_ed]

    Also for Uelen, which is a cold place in the northeast corner of Russia.

    Uelen's in the Chukotka region of Russia.

    Which always comes up when humans talk about the history of Siberian Huskies.

    So I may write more about it. But not tonight.

    Random internet stuff

    space warrior pretends Dachshund is rifle The Human Assistant spent too much time floating around the internet today. So he doesn't want to type my follow-up on Lucy tonight.

    It will keep him up too late. Awww. Now that it's after midnight, it is officially his birthday. Friends will take him out for lunch.

    But he has to be out of bed and awake for that. So he wants to go to bed "early" (for him).

    So here's random stuff that he bookmarked today.

    Menu Foods and PetSmart lost money in the third quarter this year. Does that mean that the third time they traded quarters this year they only got two dimes?

    I don't know. But PetSmart blames it on stuff other than recalls. Heh.

    The H.A. doesn't usually shop there. But so far it's the only place he's found citronella spray for breaking up dog fights. So he's done his part in supporting them, for sure!

    baby seal at animal shelter
    They say Siberian Huskies get lost! Here's a baby seal that wandered away from his seal-family beach party.

    And ran smack into an animal shelter!

    He looks unhappy. I bet he has road rash from dragging himself down the streets! He will be fixed up and taken back to the ocean. Whatever that is.

    so-called pit bull
    Forty-six "pit bulls" disappeared from the Memphis Animal Shelter. They say the dogs were stolen. I think they are covering up an escape!

    "There were no obvious signs of a break in from the outside."

    It would take one, maybe two Siberian Huskies to bust out of a place like this! Imagine if 21 adult dogs of any breed were trying to get away from 25 puppies? "Stolen," my furry white behind!

    puppy asleep in food bowl
    Speaking of Siberian Huskies.

    Here is an itty bitty puppy guarding the food bowl. The way only puppies can. This is a puppy I could like! Too bad it isn't the red and white. Well, learn by example!

    Michael Vick's former house in Virginia
    Michael Vick's dog-fighting property is for sale. Again.

    A developer bought it recently. He plans to tidy it up and re-sell it in a month. No doubt he is an honest and hard-working man. Earns every dollar he gets. But he's planning on profit from the property's negative fame. Wasn't that already included in the price he paid?

    How much do you suppose he can mark that up?

    The house has 5 bedrooms and 4 and one-half bathrooms. (Huh? Half a tub, half a sink...?) On 15 acres. If you're interested. And didn't catch the info the first 100 times it was on the news.

    If you look on Google Earth you'll see the sheriff's office is nearby. That should be reassuring.

    A few states have "puppy lemon laws." A few more states are thinking about them.

    To me it sounds like people can get refunds if their new puppy gets into the refrigerator and eats all their lemons.

    But the Human Assistant says no. The laws protect people if a new puppy is sick or gets sick right away.

    My picture is here because I was sick when I came from the breed rescue. H.A. spent $600 on me the first month. Besides for food. And toys.

    My vet and the H.A. think I got a pair o' sites at the rescue. Probably due to conditions there.

    Then it turned into my new monia. And now symptoms come back sometimes. My vet says I may need medicine for it forever. (And the medicine controls the symptoms pretty well.)

    H.A. says laws like this could be real problems for shelters and rescues if they didn't cause the animal's illness. If the law applies to them.

    More information is needed. But it's something to watch for in your state!

    That's all for now. H.A. must get his beauty sleep! ::Big Husky Grin::

    Outside the Dog House

    There's a story on the internet about the world's biggest dog meeting the world's smallest dog.

    manipulated image of big dog and small dog Itchmo got the story from the U.K. newspaper the Daily Mail.

    Oops. Itchmo made the story disappear.

    I wonder if the Human Assistant caused that with the rude comment he left there?

    He says it wasn't
    rude, exactly, just a little harsher than he meant it to be.

    They may make the picture disappear too. It should be right here at the top of this post. If it's not, try here.

    Itchmo says the dogs "met in Washington D.C. to celebrate Guinness World Records Day 2007."

    The Daily Mail says they "met up to celebrate Guinness World Records Day 2007 outside the White House in Washington D.C."

    Guinness World Records and the Daily Mail are both in Great Britain.

    H.A. left a comment on the Daily Mail article saying they should remember burning the place down 193 years ago. "It didn't have a dome then, and it doesn't have a dome now."

    I wonder if he was mad at me about something?

    north face of U.S. White House U.S. Capitol over reflection pool U.S. Naval Observatory

    Washington, D.C.
    Washington Monument,
    Washington, D.C.
    The Pentagon,
    Washington Monument
    in background,
    Washington, D.C.

    The President lives at the White House, but it doesn't have a dome. Congress doesn't live at the Capitol, and it does have a dome.

    The Vice President's home is at the Naval Observatory. It has more domes than you can count! Espeically in such a small picture. Click on it to see a bigger one. I don't know if the Veep actually lives there. But I sure would! It looks cool!

    But it also looks like none of these buildings in Washington are the one in the doggy photo. The Capitol is close. But the thingy on the very top is way different.

    Where, or where could this building be?

    So the U.S. Capitol isn't the right building, but maybe another capitol is! Like a state capitol. Here are some examples:

    Missouri state capitol Indiana state capitol Maine state capitol Oklahoma state capitol

    Maybe!

    But there are so many capitol buildings! There must be at least one for every state! I didn't even know how many until now.

    The Human Assistant set up a page of state capitol pictures on his blog.

    He said it took a looong time to put everything together. Little pictures of all 52 state capitols. Links to bigger pictures of all 52 state capitols.

    I was surprised that he did all that without saying anything rude. I guess he's not mad at me after all! Not that I know what he'd be mad about. I'm a good doggy! He tells me that a lot.

    I'm really glad he put the pictures on his blog. He said that with 52 of them it may take computers with slow connections a long time to load them all. Even though they're small pictures. So it's optional. If you want to see the 52 state capitols you can go to his blog. If not, you don't have to, if you just want to read my blog.

    Do you already know what building is in the doggy picture? Don't post it in a comment just yet. The other two who read my blog once in a while may want to figure it out for themselves!

    By the way, that picture is phoney baloney. I didn't believe H.A. at first because sometimes he pulls one of my legs. Which I hate.

    He said the dogs look pasted onto the background. Which I guess is true. And he said the shadows don't all go the same direction. Which I couldn't really tell. He said to trust him. Which I don't, always.

    Then he showed me the press release from Guiness World Records. It says, "Manipulated Image."

    That kinda annoyed me. I guess it annoyed some other people, too. But there you have it.

    It's so hard to decide who not to trust these days!

    ... You can pick your pets ...

    Tucker:  Everydoggy knows this human joke, right?
    • You can pick your nose;
    • You can pick your pets;
    • But you can't pick your pet's nose
    Back when I had a new monia the Human Assistant wiped my nose a lot. And the walls. He says I had a ferocious sneeze. And a couple of times I wiped my nose on his jeans.

    Anyway.

    PICK YOUR PETS

    A family can keep their pet sheep. Montana? California. They live in Dixon with 16,000 other people.

    "[N]eighbors in the area have complained about a strong odor coming from the Angelmans’ property."

    No ... ummm ... kidding, Sherlock!

    "I think we need to do whatever we need to make [the sheep] stay, but please don’t get another sheep,” said Vice Mayor Michael Smith." (I had Human Assistant add the emphasis. It was a nice thing for the man to say.)

    A pet camel may have killed a woman. Egypt? Australia.

    In one article the police shrug and say maybe. We'll see what the autopsy says. In another article they say probably, "in what police suspect was mating behavior."

    This was a month ago. Human Assistant says he hasn't found an article about what the autopsy found.

    A week ago a woman found a pet zebra in her driveway. Africa? Oklahoma.

    The newspaper story has better pictures. The itchmo re-write has the story's end. The owner said that "he doesn’t know he’s a zebra."

    Maybe he thinks he's a Siberian Husky. That could explain why he was wandering. Remember:
    • Always hold onto your Zebrarian Husky's leash!
    • Your Zebrarian Husky must not be able to jump over your fence!
    • Your Zebrarian Husky must not be able to dig under your fence!
    • For Zebrarians: don't leave "a big tongue lick imprint" on the cat's bowl!
    • Also, get lots of treats! It helps for remembering where home is.
    Time for me to have some treats! Oh Human Assistant...!
