ADOPTED!

✔  Payton had been on trial adoption. His humans went to MaxFund last Thursday and made it permanent!

✔  Sequoia was busy late last week!  She was adopted, returned ("Doesn't get along with other dogs") and adopted again!

Whew!

Now she's an only dog. She has an 8-foot fence and humans who are experienced with Husky mixes. Her new mom runs 5 miles a day. Well, that's a start...!

✔  Zena did some moving around too!  She had been in the MaxFund office where all the visitors could see her. But nothing happened!  So about a week ago she went into a foster home.

Then over this last weekend she got adopted!  This wasn't a fast foster failure. Some entirely different humans got her. What a lucky dog to finally have people interested in her!

Speaking of lucky....

It's a good thing I have this blog! The Human Assistant went to the shelter on Monday and again spent some time with Caesar, the big Akita.

Gave him a Milk-Bone from the house!  Tossed his stuffed Santa. Played grab-paw with him. Scratched his fur and got his face washed.

Then he said to a MaxFund person, "I sure wish I could take Caesar!"

They said, "You can!"

H.A. said, "Huh uhh, he's an Akita and doesn't get along with other dogs."

They said, "Caesar's an Akita that gets along with other dogs!

"Except maybe Tucker. Caesar likes girl dogs and submissive dogs."

So he says, "Tucker's not aggressive, but he's not exactly submissive either. Maybe I could bring Tucker here and trade him for Caesar!"

And they wisely pointed out, "No, because then Tucker wouldn't have help with his blog."

Whew!

Not that H.A. would seriously trade me for another dog. I mean, I'm a Siberian Husky! He wouldn't want an Akita, would he?

Sibe of the Month Club

The MaxFund shelter has another Siberian Husky now! The Human Assistant went there on Sunday. We have exclusive pictures of Sequoia!

They went to the car to get his walking stick and distance glasses. She jumped right in! Pushy little thing! When he didn't get in and drive, she got back out again.

Phooey!
I'm getting out

Sequoia just arrived a few days ago. And she has to have that no-puppies operation. So she's not available for adoption yet. And so she doesn't have a link on MaxFund's dog page yet.

They went for a walk. Then they had to wait to get the exercise yard to themselves.

Hey!
Is that another dog?
It is another dog!
Let's go let's go!

Sequoia didn't get to mix with any other dogs that day. H.A. said the other volunteers all seemed kinda busy and in a hurry.

When they were in the yard, he unleashed her. She ran back and forth a few times and then sniffed around everywhere.

Ain't I dainty?

Can you tell she's a puppy? About 10 months old. She came from the Denver Municipal Animal Shelter. I guess she had been on their list too long.

Or they thought she'd get adopted easier at MaxFund, or something. But H.A. says there isn't any other info in her file.

Here are the other Sibes that have been at MaxFund just in the last few months! H.A. has volunteered there for over a year. They didn't have any Siberians until lately!

It kinda seems like MaxFund became a Siberian Husky rescue group over the summer!  ::big Husky grin::  It's good to know that they're going to good homes!

Hey, Lucy!

I've spent the last week making sure that Payton the Paw does not come to my house.

SUCCESS !

Payton's adoption must have gone through on Friday or Saturday. But he didn't go to Ringo's home. The woman that I mentioned took him on a trial adoption. Probably to make sure he plays nice with her Husky mix-up.

HOWEVER !

The Human Assistant is still looking for another dog to bring home! He's thinking I might not mind a large, senior female type.

Just to show him that this doesn't give any dog an automatic pass, I rolled and pinned Gremlin today. And she's been with H.A. for more than 13 years!

I brought my mid-day apple into the house and plopped down in the dining room. She should've gotten up and given me more space. I'm sure she knew I was feeling cranky. When I finished my apple, I jumped on her. H.A. was mad at me because Gremlin was all crying and stuff. Well, hey. Welcome to a Husky household!

I mentioned Lucy here a couple of days ago. Her MaxFund picture is all sad-eyes like Payton's was. H.A. took some too:
Lucy at MaxFund Lucy rolling on the grass
Lucy lying on the grass Lucy romping
  Hey, Lucy!

Tell you what. She was surrendered for not getting along with other dogs.

H.A. says her family had her for quite a while before they decided that. More than a year, anyway. Why did it take so long to figure that out??? He's trying to find out if anyone at MaxFund heard something believable. Something besides, "she's 9 years old."

He thinks if I don't like her, I may like somedoggy else:

You know, I kinda don't think so!

These dogs don't have enough fur to keep them warm when H.A. leaves the back door open for me. Which he will continue to do, of course, through the winter.

They also have no tails. Almost none. Like Gremlin! She is part Rotten. I mean, Rottie. So her first people cut off her tail while she was still a little puppy.

A man wanting a Rottie was at the shelter Sunday. And he wanted one for good reasons, not for like protecting him from police raids while he deals drugs.

So maybe H.A. will get lucky and the man will take both of these dogs! H.A. doubts it. He even says the man might adopt a Dobie instead.

I won't show Doobers right now because the ones at the shelter are only a year old. H.A. doesn't think that 13-year-old Gremlin and 9-year-old me would put up with one that young.

Anyway. We'll see what happens.

Matchmaking

Exciting news for Payton! Two possible adopters brought their dogs to meet him Thursday. One was the guy who adopted Ringo. The other is a woman who has Niko.

(The Human Assistant can't remember the woman's name at the moment. I hope he got the dog's name right!)

It sounds like both would be good homes. Except for the fact that all three dogs are young males. Maybe they can work it out.

The Human Assistant went to MaxFund today just to check on Payton and see whether Ringo's new dad knew about him. That's when he found out about the visits.

Volunteer Cindy was walking Payton. They went into the exercise yard. She threw balls for him and he retrieved them! Sheesh! Until he got tired of it, which didn't take too many throws.

The woman says Niko is the same way. He's a Sibe/German Shepherd/Rottie/or-something mix. We haven't met him. That's just what she told H.A.

Her setup is probably better than Ringo's right now. H.A. says he votes for her. If all the references check out okay. Not that anybody listens to him at MaxFund. Heh. At least I listen to him. Sometimes.

The woman's house has a doggy door. One of the adoption people at the shelter didn't like this. That was kinda baffling. But there was a reason, sorta.

A dog that was recently adopted from MaxFund went out her home's doggy door. And escaped! It does not sound like the problem is the door! It's the yard! Right?

(They did find her.  ::WHEW::!)

Anyway. We'll see what happens. But something good for Payton, I hope!

While H.A. was at the shelter he looked for another dog to bring home! I couldn't believe it!!!  ::Grrr::

He found Lucy, a senior female. He says she's a happy and sweet doggy. He took some photos of her.

He took some of Payton, too. That one at the top is new. But he sorta forgot he had the camera when Payton was fetching the ball! I wish I could've watched him.

Like H.A. says, you have to know the breed. Then any given dog will toss the rules out the window!

Or chew them up, like I would. I'm very good about fences. No jumping over, no digging under. So I get a tiny bit of slack over the chewing. But not as much as I deserve!

Especially with talk about bringing another doggy here! I will have more to say about that next time!

Oh. H.A. says Payton's muzzle is kinda blocky. More Mal-ish, he thinks. The picture up top is the one that shows it best. Which is not very well. You can click on it to see a larger image.

Payton the Paw

Payton and toy at MaxFund   Please,

NO CATS !!!

Payton "the Paw"
    at The Max

A portrait inside "the Big Fence"

Holly made the Human Assistant remember that pure Alaskan Malamutes can't have blue eyes.

So he posted that on the forum for volunteers at the MaxFund shelter.

Then he found out they were considering an application for Payton from someone who has cats.

Holly had just commented about this on the Army of Four blog. So then he quoted Holly on the volunteer forum:

Holly:  Zim sits when he sees a cat? That's strange, we usually try to chase them.

H.A. was so steamed when he thought about the people who review the applications! They hadn't learned about Northern breeds even though he had tried a couple of times to give them information. He had to stop cussing before he started typing!

Anyway. He took this picture of Payton the same day he took the one we posted last time. He doesn't look so smiley in this one! (Payton, that is.)

Did anydoggy have to look twice to make sure Payton didn't have a real cat? That's kinda the effect the H.A. wanted. But he had already made the picture look "edgy" (his word) before he even thought about putting the cat caption on it.

Payton kept pacing around this fenced area. He was looking out and looking for a way out. H.A. tossed him a toy to see if he'd at least stand still.

In the picture it looks like Payton is guarding the toy. But he was just sniffing to see what it was. While keeping an eye on H.A. An instant later, Payton walked away from the toy.

He was in a fairly dark shadow. So to start with the image isn't as smooth as the other one. Contrast was low. H.A. overly made up for that, and presto! Payton is a yardbird-dog!

Or something like that.

DNF list

You may know about DNC lists and DNA lists.

"DNC" makes the Human Assistant think of Democratic National Conventions. Especially the 1968 DNC. And of the Chicago Eight.

There will be a Denver DNC. But that's next year. He has trouble thinking about next week!

And DNA lists, well.... Try Wikipedia for lists of projects that sequence genes.1  Animals are toward the bottom of the page. In case you want to check up on what it takes to make a cat or a nematode or a puffer fish.

But for most humans a DNC list is where you put your name saying DO NOT CALL !

And a DNA list is names of people where an animal shelter or rescue group says ≡ DO NOT ADOPT ≡ to these poor excuses for humans.

They may be irresponsible backyard breeders or animal abusers or sell animals for experiments. Rescue groups share these names because the people go to lots of different places to get animals.

I am starting a DNF list. But it's just for the Human Assistant.

Now that Shu Shu is gone he thinks he should bring more poor doggies here to take care of. And get in my way. And make me guard my apples.

I am strongly opposed to this idea!  No more!  We have had five foster dogs this year! That's about six too many (when you count his daughter's dog Zot)!

But as another volunteer at the MaxFund shelter said when H.A. brought home Shu Shu, I don't have that much control over what he does.

So at the very least I have a ≣ DO NOT FOSTER ! ≣ list.

It's okay for other people to foster these dogs. Just not the Human Assistant. (And probably not Minky's mom and dad. For sure not until we can get foster dog Tippy outta there!

There are two dogs on the DNF list so far. One is an Alaskan Malamute. (Like Hollybollybananafofanaboo!)

In the first place, Payton is a large male. We have one of those already thankyouverymuch.

In the second place, he is fraidy of the H.A.  Dog-dog issues are more than enough fear and loathing in Colorado.

I don't know which annoys me more. The happy face or the sad face. Both of them can just stay away!

photo of Payton by Ed MaxFund shelter's photo of Payton
Payton by mr_ed Payton's MaxFund photo
MaxFund's dog Braxton Zot the dog
Braxton's MaxFund photo Daughter's dog Zot

The second dog who can just stay away! is Braxton. He's male too. So that's a problem.

But look at his disturbing resemblance to Zot!

We finally figured out that Zot really wanted to be an only dog. It only took three trips to emergency rooms. Two of them for me.

[If you've never been in the middle of a dog fight inside a car, well, you just don't know what you're missing!  -- mr_ed]

So no more Braxton-Zots here.

Actually, the whole MaxFund zoo should just stay away. Especially now. They have kennel cough going around. A 13-year-old Gremlin and a 9-year-old former new monia patient don't need that!

But that's my ≣ Do Not Foster ! ≣ list for now.
